A moody, mid-century retreat set within a Miesian icon on Lake Shore Drive, this comprehensive renovation was an exercise in recalibrating the interiors of a modern classic. To transform the rigid footprint for a family of five, we worked within the building’s glass-and-steel bones—refining the lines and internal flow to create a more intentional sense of place. The resulting design eschews the typical "airy" high-rise aesthetic for a weighted, cocooned atmosphere, where deep walnut millwork and a saturated palette anchor the home and act as a frame for the Lake Michigan views.
A material dialogue between the two bathrooms pays homage to the building’s mid-century heritage through handmade ceramic tiles and a contemporary rift on classic terrazzo.
In the bedrooms, a full color drench saturating the walls, trim, and drapery creates a soothing, serene retreat. In the guest room, a custom wall-to-wall walnut headboard provides a singular, streamlined anchor for two queen beds—maximizing utility while maintaining a refined hotelier sensibility.
